The rest of Monday

Since I was so excited about what I did on Monday (i.e., purchased an iPhone), I already posted that news. So here’s the other interesting part of the day . . . food!

Dinner Monday evening was at Crystal Jade, a restaurant I found online that happened to be in the same area as Din Tai Fung (see previous post). This place seemed to attract more locals than foreigners, which was nice. I had a pot of green tea and dined on braised bamboo shoots and vegetables with rice noodles.
The ambience. :)
My dinner. The tan-colored bits are the bamboo shoots.
The black shriveled bits are wooden ear mushrooms.
The orange bits are carrots. Pretty good stuff.
For dessert, I ordered three glutinous rice balls with sesame paste filling. I know that probably does not sound very appetizing, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. The combination of flavors and textures (especially the textures!) was something I had never experienced. The outer part, the glutinous rice, had a nutty taste and was very soft. The texture was like biting into ball of finely processed and slightly sticky flour. The sesame paste had a different nutty flavor and added the texture of an oily natural peanut butter—viscous with some grit, and not too sweet. I would go back again just to get that dessert.
Glutinous rice dessert.
Can't you just taste the sesame paste?
More ambience--the lamp over my table.
The whole meal cost 82RMB (about $14). After living and eating in the Washington, D.C. area for five years, this is a dream come true!
